One of the reasons why we are ranked in the Top 5 Sixth Form Colleges in the country is that we do not process students, we develop people.
Activities outside the classroom are a vital part of College life, supporting a student's personal development and growth, as well as gaining skills and experience that make them well-rounded individuals ready for their next steps.
From having fun and making new friends, to gaining access to university programmes unavailable elsewhere, our students benefit from bespoke Supra and Extra-Curricular Programmes that open doors for the future.
Oxbridge Programme:
The BSFC Oxbridge Pathways Programme is designed to guide and support students with their applications to Oxford, Cambridge or any other Russell Group universities.
Health Professionals Programme:
In close collaboration with the Liverpool City Region’s Careers Hub, our bespoke Health Professionals Programme is designed to help students to prepare for the competitive university application process ahead.
The programme works closely with local hospitals and universities to expose students to the range of clinical experiences that are critical to a competitive application. There are no entry requirements for this programme, but students must be willing to develop their interpersonal and communication skills through engaging in voluntary or paid work in the community.
Medicine, Dentistry & Veterinary (MDV) Programme:
Our Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV) programme supports students through a range of activities to include preparation for the UCAT exam, participation in events such as Hackathon, and preparation of a competitive personal statement.
Students must be studying Chemistry A Level and ordinarily need a strong GCSE profile (minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade 7) in order to meet university entry requirements.
Tomorrow's Teachers Programme:
The Tomorrow’s Teachers programme is an innovative programme run by BSFC and supported by TES, which allows us to develop talented future teachers.
We aim to inspire students that are considering the teaching profession and equip them with the skills and experience they need to embark on a fulfilling teaching career. This programme is open to all aspiring teachers, however students must be prepared to complete work experience in an educational setting.
HE+ Programme:
HE+ is a programme run collaboratively between the University of Cambridge and BSFC.
It supports students who have the potential to progress to selective higher education but are perhaps from under-represented areas and backgrounds and therefore may be less likely to progress on to such universities. Participants do not need to be considering an Oxbridge application, but must be academically able and aiming for a high-tariff university. This is a Widening Participation scheme and therefore specific social criteria apply to eligibility.
Widening Participation Programmes:
A suite of programmes that see BSFC work collaboratively with a range of professional bodies that share a common goal, which is to encourage, mentor and support students to make informed decisions about their next steps, and to position themselves for career success. These programmes all have specific social and/or academic eligibility criteria – all potentially eligible students will be identified and encouraged to participate.
Extended Project Qualification:
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an additional qualification you can take alongside your other subjects. It offers you the opportunity to research a subject area to a degree-level standard.
You do not need to apply for EPQ as part of your initial course choices. You will be given the opportunity to add EPQ to your programme during your first year of studies.
Clubs & Activities:
With more than 40 clubs and activities to get involved in, there's always so much for students to do.
From learning British Sign Language to 5-a-side football, there is something for everyone. We also hold 'Funday Friday', to help new students settle in when they start in September.
Trips & Visits:
Subject departments offer multiple trips for students each year, from visiting Shakespeare’s Globe and the museums of London with English, to seeing how the media industry works at the BBC and ITV in Media City, Salford.
Some will travel abroad with French or Spanish, while a cross-College trip to New York in July is open to all students.
University Visits:
At the end of their first year, all students visit a range of leading universities across the region, getting a feel for the types of campus, learning environments and social aspects of Uni life. This experience is invaluable for making informed choices for next steps after College.
Futures Day:
Our annual Futures Day sees more than 60 universities, apprenticeship providers, employers and other organisations come to the campus for a festival of learning about next steps after College.
Students have a personalised programme of talks to match their future goals, and a Higher Education fair offers advice for the step up to university.
Plus – the street food lunch always goes down a treat!
Careers Fair:
We invite a broad range of companies each year to talk to our students about their options after College. Fairs held include STEM, Law, Health Care, Apprenticeships and Volunteering.
We also hold a Freshers Fair each September when students can sign up to our wide range of clubs and activities.
National Competitions:
Students across a number of subjects get involved in competing against schools and Colleges in the fields of Law, Chemistry, Politics and Maths, just to name a few.
College teams have won debating contests in the European Youth Parliament and made the national finals of the Bar Mock Trial at the Old Bailey in London.
Visiting Speakers:
Students attend a wide range of assemblies during the year hearing from both visiting speakers and specialist College staff.
Visitors bring into focus important, challenging topics such as racism, drugs awareness and knife crime, all vital issues for young people to learn more about.
Duke of Edinburgh Award:
The College facilitates both the Gold and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards for students, helping them navigate an expedition in the mountains and gaining many other skills to enhance their future prospects.
Student Festivals:
Prom, Christmas Fest and Halloween Fest are highlights of the year, where students dress up and take part in fun activities, competitions and bake sales.
You might even catch a few members of staff in fancy dress as the College transforms into a festive and action-packed place to match the season.
Performing Arts:
We are very proud of the wide range of creativity our students display in Dance, Drama and Digital Music Production.
Acting, singing, dancing and playing music in the annual College production are open to all students to take part. December 2024’s production ‘Broadmoor’ was a fantastic sold out show!
