Eight students from Birkenhead Sixth Form College showcased their cyber security expertise in the Merseyside Police Cyber Challenge 2025, securing an impressive 3rd place finish in the competition!
A Prestigious Event in Cyber Security
The annual Cyber Challenge, held at Aintree Racecourse on 5th March 2025, brought together the best young cyber minds from across the Merseyside region. Over 3,900 students initially competed in a series of online challenges, testing their technical knowledge and problem-solving skills. Only the top scorers from each college and school earned an invitation to the final showdown, making BSFC’s achievement even more remarkable!
Tackling Real-World Cyber Security Challenges
During the finals, students faced eight industry-led challenges designed to assess their cyber security knowledge, teamwork, and analytical skills. They worked alongside industry experts from leading organisations such as IBM, BAE Systems, SANS, Civil Aviation Authority, IN4 Group, and more.
Each challenge tested different cyber security skills, including:
-
OSINT Investigations – Using open-source intelligence to track down information on individuals under police investigation.
- Geoguessr with a Twist – Identifying global locations using minimal clues.
- PC Building Race – Competing to assemble a fully functional computer in the shortest time possible.
The team demonstrated exceptional teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, receiving commendations from event organisers for their approach to each challenge.
Recognition & Career Opportunities
At the end of an intense day, the BSFC team proudly finished 3rd out of the 10 finalist teams, earning themselves medals and goody bags as a reward for their hard work.
Beyond the competition, students also had the chance to explore their future career paths at an exclusive careers fair, engaging with top employers about apprenticeships, university courses, and careers in cyber security. The event provided invaluable insight into the growing demand for cyber professionals and the exciting opportunities available in the industry.
A Huge Congratulations!
This achievement highlights the exceptional skills, dedication, and teamwork of BSFC students. A huge well done to our team for their success, and a massive thank you to Merseyside Police and their industry partners for hosting such an inspiring and educational event.
We look forward to seeing what our students achieve next in the world of Cyber Security!
