Former BSFC Student Leads Team to Victory on University Challenge

Robin Wainwright, a former student at The Sixth Form College, recently appeared as Team Captain for The University of Liverpool on popular T.V Quiz Show, University Challenge.

Robin has just completed his second year at The University of Liverpool where he currently studies Biological Sciences. Robin studied at the College from 2011-2013 and achieved fantastic A Level Results during this time, leaving with an A* in Biology and French and an A in Chemistry.

Robin applied to appear on University Challenge after receiving an email from The University of Liverpool’s Guild of Students, inviting students to try-out. Robin completed a computer-based quiz before being selected to join the team.

Robin explained, “The Guild Activities Co-Ordinator organised the chosen team to meet and we completed another quiz which led to me being selected as Team Captain. The entire experience was extremely rewarding – it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” Robin prepared for the competition by regularly meeting with his team and practising from a University Challenge quiz book and watching former episodes of the show on YouTube.

Robin and his team mates competed against Oxford’s St Peter’s College and led the University of Liverpool to victory with a win of 205 – 130. Robin commented, “It definitely raised the stakes when I realised we were competing against an Oxbridge College – especially as St Peter’s College had beaten The University of Liverpool the previous year. When we won it was fantastic – an amazing experience!”

Robin also spoke fondly of his time at The Sixth Form College, “The College always had a very welcoming and pleasant atmosphere, the teachers are excellent, helpful and friendly and the students are all there by choice which produces a happier atmosphere than you might find in school. In College I was able to improve my grades drastically from what they had been in school which enabled me to get into the University of my choice.”

Robin is currently considering continuing to study for a Masters Degree and potentially a PHD in Biological Sciences after he completes his University Degree next year.
