On June 7th 2013 the Wirral Youth Heroes Awards gathered 27 of the most inspirational young people in Wirral and 3 inspirational adults. The awards event took place at the Floral Pavilion, New Brighton.
9 out of the 27 shortlisted candidates received an award for their achievements and all of the young people had a night to remember, being celebrated as Wirral’s most inspirational young people.
One young person to receive an award was Birkenhead Sixth Form College student Alex Kneebone; who received the Wirral Christian Centre and Life Church Bebington Award for Caring for Others. Alex, who is studying full time Level 3 BTECs in Law and Medical Science is also a young carer.
Alex said of the event:
“At first, when my name came up I was surprised and I still don’t know what to think. It could have gone to any of the others, I thought, ‘I’m just getting an award for something I do every day’. It was fun though.”
Alex’s Personal Guidance Tutor at the College, Leigh O’Mahony added:
“I’ve taught Alex for a while now, he is a very conscientious student and truly a silent hero. Until I spoke to his mum recently I had no idea how much responsibility he has at home and how much he does because he just gets on here at College. For Alex this award is celebrating his everyday life. Everyone at the Sixth Form College is pleased for him.”
Wirral Youth Heroes Awards is one of the biggest of its kind in the UK and the VIP guest list included local dignitaries, business leaders, MP’s and celebrities.
