In April we invited NHS researchers into college as part of a national project investigating young people’s attitudes on tobacco branding.
Piloting the research approach here at BSFC; The team from Plan Packs Protect were in college common areas wearing jackets lined with branded cigarette packages and carrying iPads, collecting information from students. The Plain Packs Protect website has more information on the project’s aims as they try to sign-up supporters for neutral branding of tobacco less likely to attract children and young people to smoking.
The project is in action whilst the UK government hold a public consultation about whether tobacco companies should continue to be allowed branded packaging or, like Australia recently, move to plain packages.
In a commitment to our student’s health the team will be back on the 10th and 15th May; working with small focus groups of students interested in making a quit attempt. Students and parents interested in the project can contact Jennifer Foden (JF) or Kate Rigby (KR).

“Research that could result in less young people taking up smoking is a good idea. Student health and well-being is important at Birkenhead Sixth Form and being the first college to open our doors to the team, I know we won’t be the last.”
