Image of Pedal Power: Birkenhead Sixth Form College Rallies for Maggie's Cancer Charity

Birkenhead Sixth Form College recently united students and staff in a remarkable fundraising effort for Maggie's Cancer Charity. Known for providing practical and emotional support to those affected by cancer, Maggie's was chosen as the beneficiary of this year's charity drive due to the invaluable assistance staff and their families have received from the organisation.

The College took on an ambitious challenge: virtually cycling the distance between all 26 Maggie's Centres in the UK. Leading the charge was Alan Redfern, Head of Fine Art, who impressively completed the entire 2,125 km challenge on the ZWIFT platform over 11 days, fitting sessions in before and after College. Alan's dedication raised an impressive £1,700 for Maggie's. Other staff members also contributed significant distances, with Paul Moore achieving the second-highest total of 252 km.

A special mention goes to Nicholas Whittaker, whose support and motivation were instrumental in rallying participants. Nicholas himself completed 170 km, demonstrating exceptional dedication and inspiring others to join the cause.

Students showed extraordinary resilience and enthusiasm, collectively cycling just under 1,000 km. Among the standout participants were Sam and Sasha, who cycled 161 km and 66 km. The students' commitment was evident, even extending to instances where two students, having missed their bus, stayed longer to accumulate additional kilometres.

To further push the fundraising efforts, Alan also organised a raffle and silent auction, featuring a variety of prizes. Everton Football Club donated a particularly noteworthy item: an Everton Pendant signed by Manager Sean Dyche, adding a touch of excitement to the silent auction.

Alan Redfern remarked, "Maggie's holds a special place in the heart of our College. When we shared their story with the students, it was clear how much it resonated with them. The students really stepped up and made a difference."

The combined efforts of Birkenhead Sixth Form College's staff and students highlight the College’s dedication to supporting meaningful causes and making a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. The College community and determination underscore the College’s ethos of positivity and resilience.
