Five political candidates who are fighting to be elected as MP for Birkenhead on May 7th came face to face for the first time at the Sixth Form College for a political hustings event.
Frank Field from The Labour Party, Clark Vasey from the Conservative Party, Allan Brame of the Liberal Democrats, Kenny Peers from the Green Party and from Wayne Harling from UKIP attended the event to answer questions from students and members of the general public.
Many of the students from the Sixth Form College will be voting for the first time and the College wanted to host the event to give students the opportunity to listen to representatives from the major parties and have their chance to ask their own questions about the policies which are important to them.
More than 100 students and members of the general public attended the event which took place on the 29th April. Politicians, students and members of the general public debated a range of issues including spending cuts to education for 16 -19 year olds, tuition fees and the environment.
College Principal Kathryn Podmore said that the event demonstrated that students from the College have a passion for politics and the policies which are close to their heart.
Mrs Podmore said: “We were delighted that so many of our students attended the event to express their views to our local politicians. The Sixth Form College in Birkenhead is a centre of academic excellence and I am delighted that so many students are passionate about the standard of education which will be delivered by the future Government. This was evident by their concerns relating to cuts to sixth form education and the impact of University tuition fees. However the audience were also concerned about other issues such as the environment.
“It was a privilege to host the only debate in Wirral where all five candidates for Birkenhead were present and we would like to thank all of the candidates for attending.”
