Jez Williamson from Merseyside Fire Brigade and Kelly Hodgson from the Wirral Road Safety team visited the College before the Easter break to promote road safety to our 16-19 year old students.
With a large proportion of our students either learning to drive or becoming newly qualified drivers, both Jez and Kelly wanted to highlight the dangers of driving and promote safety on the roads.
An example car wreckage was brought on to the college site to aid this exercise. Students were divided into three groups and asked to work out what had happened to cause the car to crash by investigating the wreckage and feeding their suggestions back to Jez, who confirmed if students were right or wrong.
All the students enjoyed being junior detectives and then seeing if they were right in their assumptions.
Jez Williamson from Merseyside’s Fire and Rescue Service remarked, “With 1 in 5 new drivers being involved in a crash within 6 months of passing their test, it is vitally important to engage with this age group. The students really seemed to enjoy investigating the possible causes of the collision and were extremely interested in sharing and discussing their findings.”
“Wirral Borough Council and The Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service partnership is keen to continue imparting road safety messages to this age group.”
Student, Jess Carrington, said, “I thought the visit from Jez and the Fire Service today was a great way to get through to young people about their safety on the road. The car wreck was really interesting as I have never seen a car so broken down as that one was, up close. The activity on the car was exciting and challenging to find out what actually happened.”
This visit is part of a free service provided between Wirral Road Safety at Wirral Borough Council and the Fire Service.
