War Veteran Presents Prizes for College Competition to Design D-Day Gala Poster

A2 Graphic Art students at The Sixth Form College were given their first experience working on a live commercial brief by taking part in a competition to design and produce an official poster for a 70^th Anniversary, D-Day Gala Concert taking place in April 2014.

Student, Jenny Mathews, designed the winning poster and received a cash prize of £50. Jenny’s design will be used to help promote the Gala event and will be displayed in Liverpool’s Central Station in the months leading up to the Concert.

Runners up, Nicole Quirk and Kayleigh Jamieson also received recognition for their designs and were awarded with a cash prize of £25 each.

Gala event organiser, Graham Connolly was present at The Sixth Form College’s brand-new School of Art & Design to announce the winners along with local War Veteran Bob Barker who presented each with their prize. Mr Barker, who was present at the D-Day landings said, “I am very pleased to see the work produced here today as it shows great recognition of such a significant event. I am extremely impressed by the quality of each of the designs and I think all three winners should be very proud of what they have achieved.”

Kathryn Podmore, Principal at The Sixth Form College, added, “This was a fantastic opportunity for our students in Graphic Art to display their professionalism and showcase their design skills. It was a wonderful honour for the College to be able to take part and contribute towards the D-Day Gala Anniversary event.”

Winning student, Jenny, is looking forward to seeing her work displayed in the future and said, “I was really excited and proud to be part of this momentous event.”

The D-Day Gala Concert is taking place in Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall on Sunday 27^th April 2014 and will be celebrating the 70^th Anniversary of the “Beginning of the End” of the Second World War. The winning poster design will be on display in Liverpool’s Central Station from February 2014.
