The achievements of young people from the North West were celebrated at the Further Education and Sixth Form Colleges Good Citizenship Awards Ceremony, organised by LJMU’s Foundation for Citizenship.
Established in 1997, the Good Citizenship Award scheme recognises the often overlooked contributions that young people from different cultures and communities make to society. Hosted by Professor the Lord David Alton of Liverpool and LJMU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nigel Weatherill, the event was attended by the award winners, their tutors, families and friends.
The Further Education awards are sponsored by O2, which is involved with many youth-based community initiatives throughout the region. Justine Rogers, O2 Ambassador, was in attendance at the ceremony and praised the students for their outstanding contributions to their communities and schools.
Alex Heslop is currently a first year student at the Sixth Form College and was recognised for his contribution to society. Alex is a committee member, volunteer and Young Persons’ Official at a local charity in Wallasey called Charlotte’s Brightside CLC. The charity is for young people to have fun and meet new friends as well as learning new skills. Alex’s role as the Young Persons’ Official is to mentor young people accessing the charity’s events, to support events held by the charity, to link with young people and to promote the charity events. He has been involved with the charity since its inception nearly two years ago.
Alex is also a cub and scout leader for the Wallasey district. These two roles involve meeting each week to do activities including Easter crafts, shelter building, campfire building, and also putting on termly programmes for the young people. He is also involved in residential camps and taking them on days out.
Alex is also a FA qualified referee under the Cheshire County FA and referees for the Wallasey Junior League on Sunday afternoons for young people aged between 10 and 16.
In addition Alex is also part of the College’s Student Ambassador Programme, giving up his time to support open evenings, meeting with college staff to discuss events and on-going developments within the College.
Alex makes a very positive contribution to his community and to the College.
