Birkenhead Sixth Form College had the honour and pleasure of introducing students to Sir Bert Massie this week on Wednesday, 7th November 2012. Sir Massie came to college as a visiting speaker; he is former chair of the Disability Rights Commission, a governor of Liverpool John Moores University and a member of the Baring Foundation Panel on the independence of the voluntary sector.
Sir Massie joined students for an hour long talk with questions and answers session on the rights of disabled people and legislation. Through his own biography and personal story Sir Bert Massie connected abstract ideas of policies to everyday life. He described how some newer laws such as the Human Rights Act have been developed and taken through the legislative process, discussing the impact they have on society.
A great experience for any student it was particularly relevant to students wishing to study law, politics, sociology or a health care discipline at university. “The talk was very interesting and it raised important points that are key to college.” said one student.
