The New Year promises to bring great things to Birkenhead Sixth Form College and its students, with activities to deliver the best academic results and all-round sixth form education already in full swing this January.

Having been named College of the Year and the Most Inspirational Sixth Form by prestigious educational awards last year, 2024 is set to outperform last year’s unprecedented success.

A Level and BTEC results in summer 2023 broke pre-pandemic records, shunning the national picture of a downturn and setting not just a regional but a national benchmark for achievement within the sixth form sector.

Programmes in place at the College have already seen future doctors supported through their university interview process, and such high aspirations are par for the course for our students, whether the goal is higher education, apprenticeship or employment.

Five current and former doctors, including surgeons and GPs, visited the College in recent days to give bespoke help to the students planning on studying medicine practice for upcoming interviews. Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) is the system used by university recruitment for medicine and carry with them specific demands, so students receiving personal support from people in the profession is invaluable on the route to success.

Careers is a huge focus within College and plays a part in every student’s aims and ambitions, so our careers programme runs throughout the year, and is embedded into everything we do. Some highlights happen occur later this year when students have their choice of visits to leading universities to experience masterclasses, workshops and general student life on campus, before finalising their decisions on where to head next after College.

Futures Day is also an annual event at College, which sees more than 60 universities and organisations visit on a single day to give a range of talks, activities and a careers fair to offer first year students all the information they need to make fully informed choices.
Over 70 students have signed up for new clubs in January after an information event introduced them to the possibilities of extracurricular pursuits.

Every academic year begins with our Freshers’ Fair to open students’ eyes to the clubs, sports and societies on offer here at College. January hosts the ‘Re-Freshers’ Fair’, so those who want to try something new have the opportunity to get involved in fun, exciting and CV-enhancing activities.

Principal at Birkenhead Sixth Form College, Mike Kilbride, said: “The student experience here at Birkenhead Sixth Form College is quite simply second-to-none. No matter any student’s background, starting point or ambition, our teachers and support staff more than match their needs.
“Raising aspirations is in our DNA, and that is the case for every individual.

“Our size and the strength of our contacts with universities and employers means that opportunities at the College for students cannot be matched elsewhere. This is one of the many reasons why we’re oversubscribed each year.”

Mike continued: “Our award-winning careers programme is wide-ranging and thoughtful. We constantly assess how best to help student achieve their goals, and that is from the academic infrastructure established in the classroom to the huge number of activities outside it.

“Our aim is always to ensure that our young people reach beyond what they thought possible. We can see that evidenced in our first generation medical students, our grammar school cohort outperforming other local options, our enviable Sutton 30 university progression, and everything else that we have in place for our students to succeed.

“We believe in every student, perhaps every before they believe in themselves, so there is no better destination after GCSEs than Birkenhead Sixth Form College.”
